Husay at Malasakit: Love with No Bounds

When you say unconditional love, you love a person no matter how they treat you or what they do to you. It is an unchanging love and a love that has no bounds - just like a mother's love to her child. I didn't know that such love could exist even if the child is not your own. That's how a little boy showed me that it is, indeed, possible.

In 2008, a friend who was working in Singapore wanted to see me immediately. She came back here in Manila unexpectedly and was staying with one of our friends. I already sensed that she was going through a rough time, so I hurriedly went to her. To my surprise, she was already nearing her due date; she was 8 months pregnant. She also told us the whole ordeal that she went through by the time she set foot in Singapore.

A few weeks after we met, she gave birth to a wonderful baby boy, AL. She took care of her son for a month, until it was about time for her to go back to Singapore to work again. AL was left in our friend's care, together with a long-time trusted nanny.

My friend, AL's mom, would come home every now and then to visit him, when one day, she asked me if I know a place where she can rent for AL and his nanny. I found one, which was near our place but she felt uncomfortable with the owner, so it didn't turn out as planned. However, she already brought all the things because she was expecting that they can transfer right away.

My mother saw my friend's frustration and went to her rescue. And because my friend is not new to my parents, out of compassion my mom and dad offered our home for them. I remembered my mom said, "if we let other people live in our home, why can't we let the little angel live with us?!" So before she went back to Singapore again, we assured her that we're going to take care of AL and need not to worry anymore.

AL was 7-months old when he became part of our lives, and us a part of his life too. We became a family. Knowing AL's situation, we made sure that AL felt all the love he deserved. We showered him with tons of hugs and kisses every day. We guided him through every step of his development. We instill good moral and values and kept him well-disciplined. We took good care of him and loved him like our own. A love that is unconditional. He stayed with us for two years. Until the time came when my friend finally had her life put back together and met a man who really stood by her. They got married and decided that it was about time to take care of AL. That was the saddest ever, but at the same time, we were all happy because finally, he will get to be with his own family.

We wished and hoped what was best for him, that even it was hard to let go, we did. And even if he's still small to recall those memories, I know in his heart he will feel that once in his life there was this one family who accepted him with open arms, who made him happy and loved him unconditionally.

This story of our family will be forever remembered by us; a story on how our family imparted our 'husay at malaskit' (expertise and compassion) in one little boy's life. Just like how Unilab believes in 'HUSAY AT MALASAKIT' in serving people.

This day and age, the country have braved various calamities that, if anything, have only strengthened our solidarity as Filipinos. But to fully rise again as a nation, we must be able to have both excellence and compassion (husay at malasakit) in everything we do, especially when in service to others who are in need. Unilab, being the biggest pharmaceutical company in the Philippines, believes in the power of husay at malasakit and has geared their company’s belief in this. In every product they produce, they make sure that their facilities and procedures are safe so that they will be able to take care of the Filipino people better. They may have changed their processes in line with the rise of technological advancement, but their heart will always be present in the manufacturing of their healthcare products. Rest assured that in all the innovations they create, the health and safety of the Filipino people are always at the core. The distribution of their products are scattered across the country—from Luzon, Visayas, to Mindanao, to reach out to everyone in need of superior and affordable healthcare products. If anything, Unilab believes in the spirit of genuine concern to make the lives of other people better.

With their new TVC, Unilab shows their husay at malasakit thrust and hopes to influence as much as they can to the nation. After all, what matters the most is the number of lives we touch when we reach our triumphs.
